Some brands will label their jackets with a ‘down fill equivalent’ to approximate the level of warmth to the more conventional system. Because there are so many different materials used as down alternatives, each one has different insulating properties which don't often translate directly to a down fill power rating. While friendlier options are welcomed, it also makes the rating system more confusing. Down alternatives, like recycled polyester and natural kapok, have become increasingly popular among more earth-conscious and animal-welfare conscious consumers.

I was two inches from tearing my hair out over the whole 'Kris becomes the other woman' storyline. I still enjoy the horses, the actresses and actors are excellent, and there is the occasional funny line. I've recently started to catch up on ancient episodes of this show, and I have to say, I am less than impressed. I have to say, the only part of the show I missed was the horses. Matt frustrated me with his immaturity and unwillingness to "man up" and take some responsibility for his own life. Dani never stopped bothering me with her 'spoiled little rich girl traumatized by Daddy's lies, no one else's needs matter as much as mine do' routine. Junior bored me, and I couldn't understand why the writers devoted so much airtime to his stupid little 'finding himself' journey. In fact, after midway through season two when it seemed as though that wasn't going to happen, I stopped watching the show. I spent the entire season wanting Kris to end up with Matt. Somehow, the show manages to exceed those network expectations, and delivers a satisfying family drama that will hold your interest throughout the run of the series. 'Wildfire' is well worth the watch, assuming you can overlook the perpetually silly teenage drama employed by show runners seeking to ensnare those young demographics that network execs demand. Both of their performances throughout the series provide the foundation for all of the drama that ensues. Nicole Tubiola is the the rich girl who was reared in that competitive world. But the acting accolades belong to Greg Serano as the horse trainer who sees something in Kris Furillo (the convict girl) and sponsors her into the world of horse racing. Cast wise, Nana Visitor provides a familiar face (she of Star Trek DS9 fame). These first few episodes set a strong tone for the series, as the convict girl and the horse make a transcendent connection that will propel them both into a world far beyond what anyone could have imagined. It is there that she makes a connection with 'Wildfire', a horse in training for police civic duties. A tough city girl from the wrong side of the tracks, imprisoned for fairly minor crimes working toward her release as a prison laborer training horses for the city police force. There is more than enough here to hurdle viewers through the entire series. Insights into the world of competitive horse racing, and those who inhabit that world. Ostentatiously geared towards the teen angst audience, 'Wildfire' nonetheless has much more to offer. Rural setting? Family values? A girl and a horse? I am all in! 'Wildfire' ran for four seasons on the ABC Family network. Unlike the Asian dingoes, which are mostly vegetarian, Australian dingoes are terrific hunters, preying on animals such as rabbits, lizard, geese, wallabies, and even kangaroos! For smaller animals, dingoes hunt alone, usually at night, but for larger prey, they will hunt in packs. The video below shows some domesticated dingoes displaying their natural digging behaviour. Most scientists group both types of dog under the scientific name Canis lupus dingo. These animals share many physical characteristics with dingoes, notably the sounds that they make, their colour, size and flexible limbs. a wolf and a dingo could have pups), but generally don’t, because they are separated geographically.Ĭlosely related to dingoes are New Guinea singing dogs. However, the dominant female will often kill the pups of other female dingoes in the pack, so only hers will survive. The pack all work together to protect the pups. The pups stay with their mother until they are six to eight months old. The female gives birth to 5-10 pups once a year in a den made in a cave or under a hollow log. To communicate, dingoes will howl to each other and leave scent markers, which protect their territory and aid in the mating process.īaby dingoes are called pups. Other differences, such as length of fur and ears are present between dingoes. The dingo usually has golden or reddish fur, but sometimes you will find one that is brown or black. Dingo facts: Physical Traits and Family Life Dingoes have different coloured coats depending on where they live. Dingo habitat includes grasslands, rainforest, desert, mountains, and woodlands, but they are most commonly found in the Outback: a dry inland area where very few people live. Dingo Habitatĭingoes can be found in every state in mainland Australia (they are not present in Tasmania). Although there are still dingoes in Asia, they are primarily associated with Australia. It is thought that dingoes were brought to Australia by Asian travellers around 4,000 years ago. Let’s take a closer look at this tough canine … Although dingoes look similar to regular, medium-sized, bushy-tailed dogs, they are different in three interesting ways: 1) They have stronger jaws and sharper teeth, 2) They don’t bark instead, they howl to communicate, and 3) They are able to rotate their wrists and turn their heads 180 degrees. To make sheet pan fajitas, arrange the marinated chicken, peppers and onions in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake in a 425° F oven for about 20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through. Fajita Marinade cup olive oil cup fresh lime juice, from 2 limes 2 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1. Love using your slow cooker? Make Crockpot Chicken Fajitas. Other Cooking Options: Prefer grilled fajitas? Try this Grilled Chicken Fajitas recipe.Store the meat and veggies in separate airtight containers in the fridge. Add bell peppers and onion cook 5 minutes or until vegetables are softened and chicken is done, stirring occasionally. You can also slice the chicken, bell peppers and onions ahead of time. Combine chili powder, cumin, 1/4 teaspoon salt and black pepper in a bowl. If the olive oil solidifies in the fridge, just let it rest at room temperature for a few minutes. The marinade can be made up to 3 days ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator. Make it Ahead: You can prep some of the components ahead of time to make this recipe come together even faster.Discard Used Marinade: For food safety, discard the used marinade after removing the chicken from it.Since it’s cut into thin strips it doesn’t need a long marinating time and too long can cause the meat to break down and have an unpleasant texture. Watch the Time: Don’t marinate the chicken for much longer than an hour.I like to serve guacamole or sliced avocado, salsa or pico de gallo, sour cream and chopped fresh cilantro, plus lime wedges for an extra squeeze of fresh lime juice. Toppings: This is the fun part! Everyone can top their fajitas the way they like them.Use corn tortillas or flour tortillas depending on your preference. Tortillas: Small tortillas are traditionally used to wrap fajitas.Olive Oil: For sautéing the chicken, peppers and onions.Bell Peppers: I used one red bell pepper and one yellow bell pepper for color variation. You can substitute yellow onion if you prefer. I like to use red onion for its sweet-sharp flavor. Red Onion: Slice it thinly it will soften and caramelize in the hot pan.If you prefer dark meat, you can use chicken thighs. You’ll cut the chicken into strips before adding it to the marinade. Chicken Breast: Boneless skinless chicken breasts are lean and make excellent fajitas.I like to add red pepper flakes as well for additional spice. Fajita Marinade: For the fajita seasoning we’re using a delicious marinade made with olive oil, lime juice, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, cumin, fresh garlic, a jalapeño pepper, salt and pepper. Here’s what you’ll need to make this easy dinner recipe: The light extends vertically up to 30 inches, making it tall enough to illuminate desktop computers. It’s like being in solitary but where everybody can see you all the time,” Schmidt said. Little kids would come and tap on the window, and people would take photos. “It’s funny, when you mentioned Ivan, I’m like, I still think about Ivan all the time because it was just one of the saddest things that I saw. “For me, I didn’t really know what to expect when I went there, and when I went in there, I was just devastated,” Schmidt said.Īt the time, she was doing a story for NPR about Ivan, who was in the news because animal rights activists were pushing to get the gorilla relocated to a more appropriate environment. Suffice it to say, her impression was a little bleaker than what’s portrayed in the movie. My friend and former colleague Jenny Schmidt visited the store in the early 1990s. There was a window so people could look in at him. Believe it or not, the movie was inspired by real events that actually played out in our area, in south Tacoma. The popularity of the movie got me thinking about the true story of Ivan the gorilla and his lasting legacy for Tacoma.įor nearly 30 years, beginning in the 1960s, the real Ivan lived in a concrete enclosure inside the B&I shopping center on South Tacoma Way. If you’ve seen Disney’s family film “The One and Only Ivan,” you know it tells the story of a lovable gorilla who lives in a shopping mall with other talking animals but longs to return to the natural world to be among other gorillas. A replacement drawer wouldn’t have fixed the damage.Īlways unwrap steel storage products with the freight driver still there. I didn’t photograph the actual damage, but one of the drawers and part of the frame were crumpled inwards. The first cabinet shipped to me (shown on its pallet, above) with handling damage – it seems someone rammed the box with a fork lift – but the second was perfect. While a roughly 10% difference doesn’t sound like a lot on paper, I can fit a lot more tools due to the drawer count and dimensions. The 62″ cabinet is described as providing 31,721 cubic inches of storage volume, while this 72″ cabinet is said to have 34,326 cubic inches of storage volume. The storage volume belies its actual size and capacity. The outgoing 62″ workbench measured 24.1″ deep and 38.1″ tall. The Husky Pro Duty workbench measures 72″ wide x 24.6″ deep x 44.2″ tall. There are times when I clear the tops for heavy parts or equipment. I typically place tools, parts, workshop equipment, and other things on top of a mobile workbench. This fits well with how I use tool cabinets and chests. I wasn’t quite expecting the workbench to be as large as it is this is not a workbench as much as it is a workstation. The 20 drawers are a dream, and can fit much more tools than the Husky 62″ tool cabinet that previously occupied this space. The soft close feature is a convenience, and also provides some closed drawer retention strength, which is typical. The drawers feel to be of very high quality – they don’t rack or sag, and open and close smoothly. In reality, it does provide for a more premium user experience. There’s a 6-outlet plus 2 USB power strip on the right side.Īll of that sounds good on paper. There are two locks – one for the main section, and another for the right side bank of drawers. Husky equipped the workbench with a Kwikset SmartKey system, which allows for easy rekeying multiple locks to the same Kwikset key. The deeper top drawer and deep bottom drawers have double pairs of drawer slides and 400 lb load ratings. The frame is made with 16 gauge steel, and the base frame 9 gauge.Įach drawer can support up to 220 lbs. The top is made from 18-gauge 304-grade stainless steel. Pull handles on both sides also made the workbench easier to move around. With these casters, all 4 casters touch the floor, a benefit of the shock-absorbing system and absence of middle casters. It was easier to move this into position than with other larger mobile workbenches and tool cabinets I’ve used before. This one has 4 swivel casters, which makes it more maneuverable. Normally, larger mobile workbenches – at least consumer models – have 6 casters. There are 4 locking swivel casters, with a combined load capacity of 6,000 lbs. The very first thing I noticed was how easy it was to move the workbench into position. The same add-on options are available in both colors. Link/Susan…and the animator has to be constantly aware of each character’s unique personality." Apparently, Schiff and LAIKA has "played around with a few of them cross-mingling but this is the first time we've ever had all five interacting with one another."Īs for that lead animator? That's Anthony Straus, and this project and the ability to get his hands on every LAIKA character was a full-circle moment for him. Coming up with ways to play each unique personality against one another lends itself to a really fun group dynamic in the piece. Coraline acts and responds differently than Kubo or Mr. These characters are who they are in their films and we will not stray from that. They are not actors who play these characters. Schiff also touched on the challenges of putting together so many unique characters and keeping "each character’s personality and actions on style with who they are at their core. We want it to enhance the animation medium, to engage our fans, to add to their holiday celebration, and to stay with them long after viewing." We still want a viewer to be profoundly affected in some way by everything we put out into the world. We know that our movies have a lasting impact on audiences and we wanted to create something shorter…but no less impactful. This piece, only 29 seconds in length, still took 10 full weeks of production from concept to end of production today and involved every production department. We have extremely high standards at the studio and we applied them to the Friendgiving piece as stringently as we did on our five Oscar nominated films. But anything we create has to meet the incredibly high bar that LAIKA has established. But as a studio we are more and more committed to creating shorter form content that our fans can enjoy online and on our social channels. We can’t wait to see them come to life."Our films take years to create and work on our latest project is ongoing. Or at least has the potential to be.” So many puppets, so much potential. It’s a beautiful story, it scares me, and it’s going to be an extraordinary piece of cinema, I think. “There’s never been a film made like this in our medium. “This film is not a family film, at all,” Knight says. “Whatever we’re developing, be it animation or live-action, it’s going to be something that’s emotionally resonant, that blends darkness and light and humour and heart.” Another future project that will lean into the darker end of that mixture is stop-motion movie The Night Gardener, a “neo-noir folk tale” from a script by Ozark’s Bill Dubuque, aimed squarely at a grown-up audience. “It’s a thriller with soul,” Knight says. The studio is also preparing to move into the world of live-action with lethal hitman story Seventeen, based on a John Brownlow book. It’s so hard.”īut Wildwood isn’t the only ambitious swing that Laika has on its roster. And then you bring all the kineticism you would have in a live-action action movie. Moving a physical object a frame at a time and trying to give it life, that’s its own challenge. Stop-motion films tend to look like they’re shot on a table-top, because they are. And you’ll tell me when the film’s all done if it did. “We’re starting to chip away and tentatively stepping into, like, ‘Oh God, oh God, oh God, how are we gonna do this?’ But I think it’s going to work. “It’s the single most difficult thing we’re tackling on this movie,” Knight tells Empire. It follows a young woman, Prue McKeel, who comes across a mystical, enchanted forest – and it’s set to feature a huge battle sequence, the likes of which Laika has never attempted before. They’re in the midst of more than a decade of development on their new stop-motion feature film, Wildwood, which Empire can confirm is finally due out in 2025.ĭirected by Knight, it’s a fantasy epic based on a book by The Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy, and is set in and around Laika’s home city, Portland. Speaking to CEO and often-director Travis Knight, plus other members of the animation and production team, we meet the Laika team at a particularly exciting, challenging time in their history. To get under the hood of just how a stop-motion feature film comes together, Empire visited one of the most exciting studios in the business, Laika – behind the likes of Coraline, Kubo And The Two Strings, and Missing Link – for our brand new issue, on sale tomorrow. Stop-motion animation is a notoriously difficult medium – the tiny movements, the many iterations of a single puppet character, the time-consuming nature of creating smooth action and evoking emotion from a piece of clay. |
